Andrew Freshwater
Founder of Ranch Manager OS, Director of Clear Creek Pastoral Co and CEO of Moorella Ag Holdings · Byawatha, North East Victoria · MAIAST, CPAg
Andrew Freshwater is an Australian seventh-generation livestock producer based at Clear Creek at Byawatha in North East Victoria, where he and Angela Murphy run Angus and Red Angus cattle, the Advancer composite and a Catalyst shedding sheep flock, and he's CEO of Moorella Ag Holdings Pty Ltd, which runs cattle and sheep on properties across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
A fair bit of his working life, which he's spent breeding livestock and building the tools to measure and select them, has crossed borders, starting when he was exporting sheep genetics to nine countries by the age of nineteen and sending live rams to southern South America while he was in Year 12, and running through importing the Leachman Stabilizer cattle into Australia, helping set up a cattle breeding system on the Kazakh steppe, building a sheep genetics supply chain and recording system for Sweden's largest food company and working with an overseas government and university group on a tropically adapted cattle composite.
He's a director of Clear Creek Pastoral Co, holds MAIAST and CPAg accreditation and publishes the Clear Creek Newsletter, and he's built the software behind Genemap, TheFarmOS, PaddockOS and the Clear Creek tools because he thought commercial producers deserved evaluation and management systems built around the traits that actually make them money, including fertility, body condition, structure, docility and adaptation to the country they run on.
His view is that sheep and cattle breeding are both headed for climatically adapted composite breeds that are measured properly under commercial conditions, which is why he's collected the phenotypes in his own dataset himself, on his own stock, and written the evaluation software that analyses them.
Why he built Ranch Manager OS
Ranch Manager OS takes the forward cashflow plan he first built for Australian farms in TheFarmOS and sets it up for American beef and crop operations, so it reads a QuickBooks or Quicken export, works to the US tax year and treats cow-calf, stocker cattle, lease pasture and crop enterprises each as a profit centre that rolls up to whole-ranch profit and a running bank balance. The reasoning's the same on either side of the Pacific, because a rancher who can see which enterprise is paying its way and which month the operating line is going to be stretched is in a far better spot to make decisions than one who only finds out at tax time.
